Baku is classified as having a subtropical semi-arid climate, meaning that summers are warm and dry, while the winter months are cool and occasionally wet. Accordingly, the best months to visit are May to September, when average temperatures range from 19 to 26 degrees, and highs can reach 31 C, however finding cheap flights to Baku during these months may prove difficult.
The city’s most renowned event is Novruz Bayram, a renewal of nature festival that is celebrated on 20 and 21 March, and involves the eating of traditional foods and pastries, as well as the colouring of eggs. Early May is a particularly beautiful time to take a flight to Baku when the streets are engulfed in all the colour and creativity of the Gul Bayrami Flower Festival. Baku then turns its attention to its rich musical heritage, beginning with the Gabala International Music Festival in August when young pianists and world famous musicians come together to show off their skills. The Uzeyir Hajibeyov International Music Festival is the next big event, and takes place every year between 18 and 25 September, before the International Baku Jazz Festival gives the city some swing in the middle of October.

If ever there was a city of legend just waiting to be discovered, Baku would be it. Located on the western shore of the Caspian Sea, the ancient capital of Azerbaijan is one of Asia’s most striking cities as well as one of its most intriguing. Millennia of history, architecture and learning have given the city a feeling of deep-rooted permanence, its venerability embodied in the striking medieval stonework of the Old City and the elegant finery of Russian Imperial of the new. Landmarks such as the Maidens Tower and the Ismailiyya building add further colour to a majestic skyline, with many locations boasting stunning interiors designed to impress through their intricate artistic installations. Baku also contains many fine museums and galleries, as well as its fair share of educational centres and theatres.
Baku is well-served by public transport. 21 miles (34 km) of underground metro tracks crisscross the city, with services operating every three minutes between early morning and late night. A wide-ranging bus network is also in operation.
Your flight to Baku is served by Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD), 12 miles (19 km) to the northeast of the city. Car hire is available at the airport, as are a number of private hire taxi firms. Alternatively, Express minibus operates direct services from the airport to Baku city centre. The 40 minute trip runs every 30 minutes, and is very reasonably priced.
